mentioned earlier, most portraiture I have done has been based on
the close observation of photos. Early efforts may have had a 'photo-realist'
look about them and as a result, appear flatish in quality. As I
improved, the challenge was to give the picture something that the
camera could not. A more lifelike, rather than photo-like drawing
was what I aimed for.
The
following portraits are hand-drawn. They are as they appear and
have not been digitally created or digitally reworked.
From about the
late '80s onward I did the odd pencil portrait of family and friends,
often from poor quality snaps. It was the excellent quality of the
photography in an old book on Hollywood stars that gave me the idea
to draw highly observed portraits. This pencil drawing of Ingrid
Bergman, for example, was carried out on normal cartridge paper
measuring about 20cm square. Click
