This
was the third drawing of Ingrid Bergman in a series of three drawn
in 1989. An elegant photo, it allowed me to try my luck drawing
a three-quarter length figure. It was about this time that I started
attending a local life drawing class once a week. Although I couldn't
really complete a satisfactory drawing in the two hours provided,
I found the discipline of working within such a short time frame
was beneficial. I was never pleased with my efforts it has to be
said.

This
is a pencil drawing of the actress Jean Harlow. She must have looked
very striking with that shock of blond hair. I saw a photo of her
at London's National Portrait Gallery in an exhibition featuring
the photography of Clarence Sinclair Bull. He photographed all the
great actors and actresses in the golden age of Hollywood. The Harlow
picture hung in a dimly lit area of the gallery and looked so ghostly
with it's unusual lighting. Such contrasts would be a challenge
in pencil.
