My
first experiments in pencil and wash can be seen in this portrait
'Sara'. Drawn in 1992. This picture shows a friend's niece posing
for a school photograph. What I found striking about her was the very
dark soulful eyes she has. Was it Rossetti who said the eyes were
the windows of the soul? I wanted to capture the way she appears to
look deeply into the viewer's eyes. I felt she was looking at me more
than I was looking at her! |

Sara's
grandfather Rene seems to look across the page at her. This portrait
was also drawn with a combination of pencil and watercolour wash.
Rene was a well respected man by both family and friends. This was
drawn from a wedding photo and I hope captures the pride of a man
giving away one of his cherished daughters. Note the similarity
in the mouth between the two.
