I
have Elton John and Bernie Taupin to thank for this picture. As
I heard the words 'Goodbye Norma Jeane'
I was hooked by the haunting, beautiful song Candle
in the Wind. It played on my mind as I started this portrait
of Norma Jeane Baker. It was just supposed to be a portrait but,
for me, developed into something a whole lot more. Inspired by Symbolist
art I wanted to show that the pitfalls on the road to stardom would
ultimately lead to tragedy for this young girl. Everything in the
picture is there for a reason....

One
picture I was always going to do was one of Diana Princess of Wales.
I assumed she would be alive when I did so. Little did I know that
she would join the list of famous people considered 'taken before
their time.' It seems no coincidence that a song written originally
about Marilyn Monroe would be played at her funeral, the words slightly
different but the message much the same. This small picture was
perfect for pencil and watercolour wash. I particulary like the
drapery.
