Portrait of Jean Harlow in pencil by Paul Noonan

Portrait of Jean Harlow 1989        by Paul Noonan

Graphite pencil on paper

One can understand why she was called 'The Platinum Blond' in her day. For me Harlow was the forerunner to Marilyn Monroe and almost certainly made an impression on her. Photographing her would be a challenge to Clarence Sinclair Bull. He had to use some sort of surgical torch to light his subject for this shot. For me his lighting creates atmosphere.

For me the challenge in shading is to get that area where light meets dark. It's the trickiest part of drawing . With this portrait I tried to capture that sfumato quality I saw in pictures by the great 'da Vinci', a fine example being his 'Virgin of the Rocks' in the National Gallery, London.
