Portrait of Ingrid Bergman in pencil by Paul Noonan

Portrait of Ingrid Bergmani 1989         by Paul Noonan

Graphite pencil on paper

This was the first of three drawings of Ingrid Bergman I did back in 1989. Because this drawing was done on thin cartridge paper it remains in a fragile condition. It's also a tiny picture compared to the portraits I do now. It's fair to say that this Ingrid was my first 'serious' pencil portrait and it came as a genuine surprise to me how well she turned out.

As far as technique goes the picture is a combination of drawing and shading. There is no 'cross-hatching' in the pencil work whatsoever and still, for me, it works. I love the hair in this picture.
