Portrait
of Ingrid Bergmani 1989 by
Paul Noonan
Graphite
pencil on paper
This was the
first of three drawings of Ingrid Bergman I did back in 1989. Because
this drawing was done on thin cartridge paper it remains in a fragile
condition. It's also a tiny picture compared to the portraits I
do now. It's fair to say that this Ingrid was my first 'serious'
pencil portrait and it came as a genuine surprise to me how well
she turned out.
As far as technique
goes the picture is a combination of drawing and shading. There
is no 'cross-hatching' in the pencil work whatsoever and still,
for me, it works. I love the hair in this picture.
