Oil Pastels on Ingres Board

A year after tackling this picture in oil paint I'd return and try my hand at doing a pastel version of it. Even now I still feel pastels hold a lot of potential for me. Because of Renoir's use of rich colour I thought pastels would lend themselves well to his work. One of the best things about pastels is that they are less messy than oil paints. I feel I'm in more control with them. Overlapping or cross-hatching pastels can produce interesting effects and they can be blended using a stub of some sort.

Since doing this piece I've done a number of other pastel works and employed them in some 'mixed media experiments'. This picture was another crucial experiment for me..
