Pencil and wash on card

This drawing marked a change in my approach to the medium of drawing. I introduced a subtle watercolour wash along with the pencil and this was applied to card instead of paper. I thought this technique would bring out the healthy skin tone of Sara to much better effect. A later development in my work would be the introduction of cross-hatching the pencil strokes but that technique was not employed in this particular drawing.

I'd meet Sara for the first time thirteen years after this portrait was drawn. It was strange to meet someone you've drawn as a child. Suffice it to say she's turned out to be a fine young woman.
